The Udwarthanam massage is a therapeutic deep tissue massage which is performed with rubbing oil and herbal powder applied in upward strokes. The intensity of the massage generates heat which then melts the excess fat in your body. Hence, the Udwarthanam Ayurvedic massage is widely sought-after by individuals looking to lose weight. Besides, it can also work very well to improve the immunity and lymphatic flow of the body.

According to the classical treatment on Ayurveda, the Udwarthanam massage was followed as a daily routine. Sometimes, the massage is given along with Shirodhara or Takradhara treatments for the best outcomes.

Types of Udwarthanam Massage

Udwarthanam can be classified into two types based on the action of the powder massage.

Snigadh or Sneha Udwarthanam

In this form of Udwarthanam massage, a herbal paste prepared with a mixture of powdered herbs and medicated oils is used. The paste is then vigorously rubbed over the skin to exfoliate the skin, rejuvenate it and prevent skin disorders. It also improves its glow, texture, complexion and tone.

As per Charaka Samhita, the ancient Sanskrit text on Ayurveda, Snigadh Udwarthanam can be particularly useful for weak people and those with sensitive skin on which dry herbal powders can’t be used.

Ruksha Udwarthanam

This massage involves rubbing the dry powders of herbs on the body. The rough and dry nature of the herbal ingredients is useful for the reduction of excess Kapha. The Ruksha Udwarthanam massage also aims at reducing excess cellulite and fat under the skin. Moreover, it is beneficial for individuals with insulin resistance and obesity.

Other types of Udwarthanam as mentioned by Sushruta Samhita are

Utsadana

It is the same as Snigadh Udwarthanam which involves the use of herbal paste for the massage.

Udgharshana

It is similar to Rukhsha Udwarthanam, and the only difference lies in the ingredients used that Sushruta Samhita has specifically described, such as Reetha or Triphala powder.

Udwarthanam Massage Procedure

The herbal paste or powder used in Udwarthanam treatment is warmed before application. It is usually performed by two therapists who ensure that the massage strokes are done in a direction opposite to the growth of the hair follicles. The individual receiving the therapy needs to be in seven postures during the massage, and once the procedure is complete, they are advised to rest for about 30 minutes followed by a warm water bath.
